Since 1953 HLMW9 has had a special department for students who are hard of hearing. Classes take place at two locations:

  • Maygasse 25, 1130 Vienna  - theoretical classes
  • Michelbeuerngasse 12, 1090 Vienna - practical classes

The ‘Expositur’ of HLMW9 comprises two branches:

  • a secondary vocational school with an emphasis on economic professions -

three-year-course with a final exam

  • an add-on-course with an emphasis on economic professions

three-year-course ending with ‘Reife- und Diplomprüfung’

In order to increase the chances to find a suitable job, the curriculum of the three-year vocational school with an emphasis on economic professions has been revised and adapted to the needs of students who are hard of hearing. Currently the students are trained to be able to work in the fields of social occupations and health.

As regards languages, the students learn the Austrian sign language, which is considered to be their mother tongue, as well as German and English.

Secondary vocational school with an emphasis on economic professions

During this three-year-course, currently focussing on social occupations and health, the students are supposed to do various compulsory work placements in social institutions.

The training ends with a practical examination in Cooking & Catering Organisation.

The final exams in German and English are written whereas the exams of the educational emphasis as well as Accounting and Business Administration are taken orally.

After having acquired a sound knowledge in the field of social occupations and health, students might

  • attend further schools
  • work in social institutions such as hospitals, old people’s homes or kindergartens

Add-on-course with an emphasis on economic professions

After leaving the secondary vocational school students might attend a three-year add-on course with an emphasis on Nutrition and Business Administration. This course ends with ‘Reife- und Diplomprüfung’, which opens up access to tertiary education.
